In this Insight Robbie explores the plugin now in version 4. It seems like in nearly every other ‘From The Mailbag’ episode Team Mixing is talking about noise reduction and specifically the wonderful Neat Video plugin.

I have received as an early Christmas gift an Insta360 One 360 4K video camera, and I have begun working with FCP 10.4 to edit the footage shot on this camera after using the Insta360 Studio app to stitch the video and export it in h.264 to FCP X. As expected, due to the small size of the camera's sensor, in less than excellent lighting there is considerable noise in the resulting video, and I want to purchase the best noise reduction plugin to remove this noise. Another factor in my decision is that I have a 10 core iMac Pro with a Radeon Vega 64 graphics card coming in on Tuesday and so I want a noise reduction plugin that is multi-threaded and uses the GPU of the iMac Pro. I am presently using a Late 2013 Mac Pro with 64 Gb of ram and a Radeon D700 graphics card.
I downloaded the trial version of the Neat Noise Reduction plugin for FCP X which is supposedly optimized for multicore machines and the D700 card of my Late 2013 Mac Pro, but when I applied the plugin to a roughly 1.5 minute 360 clip, playback slowed to a few frames every few seconds. When I rendered the clip with the Neat noise reduction plugin applied, it took about 25 minutes or more to render, but the resulting rendered clip did play back peerfectly and looked much better with vastly reduced noise and little or no loss in detail. I realize that 360 4K video makes big demands and perhaps I am expecting too much, but I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions that anyone might have regarding the best nosie reduction plugin to use with this Insta360 4K 360 video.
Thanks in advance for responding. Although I did not receive any replies to the above post made a week ago, I felt there might be enough interest in 360 video editing and noise reduction to add a followup. I received my iMac Pro (10 core, 64 GB, Radeon Vega Pro 64) a few days ago and began working with Insta360 One video clips in FCP X.
Until today the latest version of the Neat Video Noise Reduction filter did not support the graphics card in my iMac Pro, which was not surprising since this computer has just started shipping. Thus my initial experiments were in applying the Neat NR filter to these 360 video clips using only the CPU.
Even in that case the performance improvement vs. My Late 2013 Mac Pro was impressive. After applying the Neat NR filter and without rendering, the clips played back smoothly, and although frames were dropped, playback was quite sufficient in quality to easily edit the material.
I contacted Neat Video support and asked if they planned to support the Radeon Vega 64 Pro card in the iMac Pro. They responded almost immediately that they did indeed plan for their plugin to support this video card and asked if I would run some bench tests that they sent to me. Over the next 3 days we corresponded several times and I sent the log results of their tests back to them.
Today they released a version of the Neat Video NR plugin for FCP that fully supports the graphics card of the iMac Pro. The support staff of Neat Video were incredibly responsive especially considering our correspondence took place over a holiday period. I might also add that the Neat NR filter does an incredible job of removing video noise without loss of detail which is quite in contrast to other NR filters that I have tried. I highly recommend the Neat NR filter if you have need to remove noise from any of your videos in FCP X. I have no relationship with Neat Video other than that of a satisfied customer. Apple Footer.
