By the way, I just realized that if you're using GarageBand, you're probably on a Mac. Most VSTs are.dll files, which only work on a PC. So you'll need to find VSTs that have a mac version (with AU or RTAS files). There are also some VST-to-MAC workarounds, but I personally haven't tried them. About 8 hours of instruction that take you from intro to master. Also, it shows you the real power of Reaper, which is basically the best traditionally linear DAW you can get right now (if you don't count the fact that it doesn't come with a shit ton of FX.in which case, you'd look at Logic or CuWhatevah).
This video is an assignment for Introduction to Music Production, an online course with Loudon Stearns on coursera.org. Please watch in highest resolution possible. Sorry about the rushed ending. I wanted to keep it under 5 minutes. I'm using Reaper for the first time, so I'm just learning the basics myself.
In making this video, I also learned how to use QuickTime to record video screenshots, and how to use iMovie to do basic editing. Unfortunately, there was some loss of quality importing clips into iMovie, and then somewhere in exporting the movie and importing it into YouTube there was additional loss of quality, so I apologize that the resolution isn't very good. If I had known that would happen, I would have tried to record it in one take and upload it directly to YouTube.
